Textual analysis of a Music Video: Reach for the Dead

Narrative

The video has no clear narrative, instead focusing on imagery, using a desolate desert landscape and abandoned buildings to enhance the eerie, unsettling tonality of the song. Towards the end the shots change, going from mostly static or slow moving to faster panning and dolly shots, matching the change of tempo in the music. At the end, the content shifts from the abandoned desert setting to that of clouds; signalling a change in the emotional narrative of the song and video, from desolate and eerie, to beutiful and hopeful, as the camera moves towards a bright light.

Effects +Film

The video looks as if it was shot on super 16mm film, heavily featuring a grainy image, light leaks and imperfections on the lens. The warm, nostalgic feel this creates contrasts the cold, desolate images whilst supporting the mournful, yearning emotion of the song. The later switch to the tranquil clouds matches a shift in the music, now more upbeat and inspiring feelings of hope and joy, which is mirrored by the change to use of crisp, high quality images, bringing the feeling of looking toward the future. The cuts of the video are mostly in time with the bass drum, often using bright flashes and film distortion to match the powerful sound of the drum, whilst also fitting the use of old film. The imperfections used throughout the video also support he band narrative, as they are independent and lo-fi.
